Gymnastic Accidents

If you want to be a gymnast, the first thing you need to know is the injury risks that come along with the sport. This is not to dissuade you, it’s just that many people think gymnastics is a safe sport, but the truth is that there are just as many gymnastic injuries per year as there are football injuries. Fortunately, there are ways to help prevent these injuries, which will be discussed below.

When you play a sport, whether it’s gymnastics, football, cross country, or anything where your body is in motion, you’re always going to have the risk of injury in the back of your mind. Some people have the ability to block this out better than others, but it’s always there. The amazing thing is that those who can block out those risks are less likely to get injured. This is because they’re not tensing up. Their bodies and muscles are loose and limber. Those that are constantly concerned about getting injured are more likely to get injured. This is because their bodies and muscles are tight. Their body won’t react the same way and be as forgiving as for someone who is loose.

If you’re the type to think about getting injured, it’s not a bad thing. And even if you aren’t the type to think about it, the risks are still there. Gymnastics is a very demanding sport. It will take a lot out of your body and, in turn, cause plenty of muscle fatigue. That being the case, there are some good habits you will need to get into in order to reduce your risk of getting injured.

While you should never be afraid to take on a new challenge, in gymnastics it’s necessary that you work your way up to any challenge. You don’t want to jump the ladder and try something way above your head. Also, if you try something that is somewhat challenging (as in something you might be ready for) and it doesn’t feel right, stop immediately. You don’t want to throw away all your hard work just to try one new trick.

Communication is also a key. This goes for parents, coaches, and anyone else you might be working with. It’s important to communicate with your parents because they will sometimes be the ones you will be most likely to confide in if there’s a personal issue or fear. It’s important to communicate with your coach so you both know exactly how you’re feeling about any upcoming challenges. And it’s important to communicate with anyone you’re working with because they will usually be honest with you about your capabilities.

When you’re working out in a gym, there should be established safety procedures. They should be read, studied, understood, and followed. If everyone is abiding by the same rules, there’s less chance of an injury occurring.Make sure your coach knows what to do in the case of an emergency. Is he CPR and First Aid certified? Is his certification up to date? These are things you must look into. Also, is there a First Aid Kit in the area?

There are other factors to keep in mind when you’re training. Know how strong your body orientation is. For example, will you know how to twist and turn to avoid injury if you make an error? Know what tricks you should and should not attempt based on your age. For children, their muscles haven’t grown enough yet to be able to withstand a ton of strain. There should be set limits. Ankles are one area to especially watch out for. Also, always use a spotter when possible.

If you do happen to suffer an injury, keep in mind that some of the best gymnasts in the world made amazing comebacks from injuries. For example, Blain Wilson tore a bicep at the 2004 American Cup and came back in Athens 2004. Annia Hatch tore her ACL at 2003 Worlds during training and came back in Athens 2004. Jason Gatson tore an ACL at the 1999 US Nationals and came back in Athens 2004. These are only some recent examples, but there are many more. No matter what happens, never give up.
